Big Brothers Big Sisters of Boulder has enjoyed several productive years pairing high school students with elementary school students in our community. The magic of this mentoring program – it is aimed at the “Little” who thinks they’re just having fun yet benefits from mentoring, while the “Big” gets more out of it than they ever thought possible. At every step of the process one of our professional match support managers is with both the Big and Little. Child safety is always our number one priority.
We had planned to continue the program this year, and with higher enrollment we were looking forward to a larger group of kids participating than ever before. All systems were go! Then, due to unforeseen class scheduling changes needed to accommodate our students, the high school and elementary school schedules just could not find a time that worked for both schools.
The BBBS program has proven to make a difference in kids’ lives. Studies show that kids matched with high school mentors are more likely to improve their social acceptance by peers and their assertiveness and leadership abilities, while the high school students report improvements in their communication, patience, reliability, leadership, knowledge of child development, and interest in working with children as a career. We want that to continue to have that happen in Boulder. BBBS volunteers and staff are “defenders of potential” and can make a difference to help kids reach theirs.
Even though we at the high school and elementary school wanted to make it happen, we just could not this year. That does not mean our Boulder program is gone; we’re just taking this year off. We are working with the schools and the school board to make sure we have even more support for the program next year.
You know that professional and dedicated support costs money. We will host the annual Bowl for Kids’ Sake at Phil and Tim’s again this year to benefit both the BBBS and the 21st Century Learning programs. Watch for details and be ready for a rolling good time and the opportunity to strike out or toss a gutter ball or two. The money we raise here in Boulder stays in Boulder for Boulder kids.
