The Jefferson Local Development Corporation recently recognized three Jefferson County businesses with various awards that were presented at an annual JLDC dinner on Aug. 22.

The Legal Tender Pub and Bistro in Clancy was named Business of the Year for demonstrating “business excellence,” showing “staying power,” increasing its workforce and being involved in the community, according to a JLDC news release.

“The original Legal Tender Restaurant, which was a landmark in the region, operated from 1982 until 2006,” the news release states. “Remodeling of the facility continued to capture the local flavor of that great establishment, and built on the history of the mining legacy of the Clancy area with the business name coming from the Legal Tender Mine.”

The JLDC praised the new restaurant’s food quality, customer service, live music and monthly lectures.

The Sweet Spot in Boulder received the Community Improvement Award “for creating pride in the community through interior or exterior improvements to their business or direct community contributions through volunteer time, services or donations,” the news release states.

Owner Kayla Holman was praised for remodeling the building that houses her coffee and baked goods shop “to help improve the Boulder downtown appearance and vitality.” Her efforts were called “a significant downtown improvement that will help be a catalyst for other downtown improvements.”

Montana Highland Lamb of Whitehall won the Innovative Business Award, which is given to a business whose business model or products or services shows innovation.

In business for over 30 years, Montana Highland Lamb was recognized for having grown into “a regionally recognized successful value-added agricultural business” that serves Twin Bridges, Big Sky and Three Forks by selling direct to consumers and, primarily, to local restaurants.

“They also sell product to the Miller Dining Hall at Montana State University as part of the Farm to Campus program,” the news release states.

The business was also noted for experimenting with how its land is grazed and the mix of forage it plants for its lambs.
