Jefferson City resident Melissa Kwasny discusses poetry at Boulder Community Library Sept. 25. She told the roughly 20 gathered that evening it was her first public presentation since being appointed earlier this year by Gov. Steve Bullock as Montana poet laureate for 2019-2021. For the first time since 2005, when the unpaid position was created, the honor is being shared among two people — Kwasny’s friend and collaborator M.L. Smoker of Helena was also named poet laureate. Kwasny read a few of Smoker’s poems before sharing a selection of her own work.
