After Gov. Steve Bullock issued a stay-at-home order to combat the COVID-19 threat, Jefferson High School teacher and Boulder photographer Dawn Smartnick had to cancel some previously scheduled family portrait sessions.

But then she thought: why not photograph families at their homes from a safe distance?

Smartnick posted invitations on Facebook, got a bunch of takers and the resulting images are enthusiastic, often whimsical and a unique record of what is sure to be a unique time in Jefferson County’s history.
