“A week before Florence. It comes up pretty quick.” Clint Layng is feeling pretty good. It’s one week into pre-season, and a week before his Jefferson High Panthers travel to Washington-Grizzly Stadium in Missoula to open the season against Florence-Carlton.

Layng has been coaching football for 20 years, nine of them at Jefferson High. Last year, the Panthers struggled to a 2-6 record — not something he’s used to. This year? Well, in pre-season, anything seems possible. On the first day of practice, 47 boys showed up; Layng had expected 38 or 40. Many of them had been packing the weight room all summer. The guys seem excited and focused.

So, yeah, there’s potential. But in the two-a-day practices that fill August mornings and evenings, “we’re just looking to get better every day. More crisp, fewer mistakes. I ask them to play fast, play hard, play physical. If you do that, I can correct the mistakes.”
